It is a programming language, with which web developers can write a script and create interactive websites. Though JavaScript is inspired by Java (obviously), it's syntax is more like the language C and is based on ECMAScript, a scripting language developed by Sun Microsystems.

One thing (out of many) that stands out JavaScript from others is that it is a client-side scripting language, which means that the source code is not processed by the webserver, but by the web browser. This means JavaScript functions can run after a web page has loaded without communicating with the server.

Its code can be inserted anywhere within the HTML of a webpage. However, only the output of server-side code is displayed in the HTML, while JavaScript code remains fully visible in the source of the webpage.
